10 Most Controversial TV Shows Season Finales Ever
‘All is well that ends well’- this saying stands always and in every case, be it a phase of life or a favorite TV show. But good TV shows ending with bad season finales is the worst taste of betrayal and emptiness that a viewer can get.
Although being able to end up things on a good note is not always easy, but such bad endings have the potential to change the perspective of a viewer on the entire series or show. And even though we don’t have any other option than to move on with such endings, we can rank them for the most controversial season finales of popular TV shows ever.
Here is the list of 10 Most Controversial TV Shows Season Finales Ever. (Spoilers Alert)
10. True Blood
After the long run of seven seasons on HBO, the series finale of ‘True Blood’ made really no sense. Nothing in that episode ‘Thank You’ didn’t really matter, whether it was the wedding of Jessica and Hoyt, who was never exactly anyone’s favorite couple, or the fate of Sookie and Bill’s epic romance. The finale was nothing but a plot directed only to show who ended with who which was a gross injustice to the sexy vampire drama and its viewers as well.
9. Lost
The TV series ‘Lost’ created so much of complex mystery in its six seasons of run aired on ABC that it became difficult for even the writers to solve it. The series finale fell very flat and added more confusion on top of the head-scratching premise of the series as a whole. Many questions went unanswered even after the finale. Were the survivors of Oceanic 815 always dead? At what point did they die? Which part of the time jumping story ere real? Who was ‘Mother’? Did Jack really just die? Although there has been a debate on the nature of its conclusion, in the end, Lost ended up giving a season finale in which all the answers to the mysteries got lost as well. It is definitely among one of the controversial season finales ever.
8. The Sopranos
Following up with the show, ‘The Sopranos’ for six seasons on HBO, the audience of the show deserved a better ending. They were left without answers and a cheated feeling after the show aired for the last time. Instead of an expected amazing ending, it gave a very quiet and non-relatable ending, including the final scene, where it appeared as though Tony Soprano was about to get whacked while he and his family were enjoying a peaceful meal at dinner, the screen simply turned black. Such an unexpected ending to the show left its viewers disheartened and disappointed.
7. Two And A Half Men
The show went down to become one of the great disappointments as an ending to a show that went on for twelve seasons on CBS. After Charlie Sheen left, the show already seemed to be a futile drag. Furthermore, the show ended up showing a person presumed to be Charlie but seen only from the back greeted by a piano that fell from the sky and killed him.
Even the co-creator Chuck Lorre was hit with another piano after spouting Sheen’s infamous catchphrase. This could be anything but definitely not an appreciable ending to such a long-running show.
6. Dexter
With Dexter pushed out of Miami as a lumberjack, Hannah losing almost all her layers, Deb suffering no repercussions for shooting LaGuerta, the introduction of new characters only to get disposed off quickly among several other disappointing plots in the season finale of the eight season-long famous show “Dexter” ended up being a slap on the face for its viewers. This ending had no buildup and no payoff. Many critics and viewers considered it to be one of the controversial season finales ever.
5. How I Met Your Mother
One of the most popular TV series ‘How I Met Your Mother’ which ran on CBS for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014, shattered all the expectations of its viewers when it concluded in its finale that the mother around which the whole story of the series was based upon, was not even Ted’s real love, rather he was actually in love with Robin the whole time while he was telling the whole long story to his kids.
Furthermore, the ending came up with the explanation that the whole story was narrated years after the mother died. In simpler terms, the show failed miserably in the end.
4. Quantum Leap
Even after more than two and a half decades, the season finale of ‘Quantum Leap’ still makes a place for itself on the list of worst season finales. Sam discovered he had the power to finally make a leap home, but nothing positive was concluded. Scott was also not seen traveling back to his own time period. Even though the events of the finale were placed in for a satisfying conclusion, the showrunners failed to execute them and hence resulted in a frustrating ending to the show. Due to the uncertainty that whether the show will be renewed for another season or not, they left the finale ambiguous.
3. Star Trek
Taking on the list of worst season finales, the famous TV show ‘Star Trek’ also makes a mark with its “These are the Voyages’, which failed enormously to satisfy the closing of the series due to its abrupt and surprising series of events in the show. The death of Commander Tucker left everybody with a meaningless disappointment. Leaving apart the disappointment of the viewers, even the show’s cast was not impressed with the ending given to the show.
2. Seinfeld
Although the plot of the season finale of the nine seasons long show ‘Seinfeld’ seemed to be a great way to remind viewers of some of the best moments and characters of the show in past, but sadly the execution of the same failed to live up to the expectations.
The two-part finale accumulated with our four main characters – Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer, being sentenced to a year in prison for their petty, selfish behavior. Such a fate of the protagonists of the show just seemed to be cruel and unearned The ending to the show would have more been respected if nothing significant happened to Jerry and his gang.
1. Game of Thrones
After building up for eight seasons, Game of Thrones ended up being on the top of this list. Not just the final episode but the entire final season is considered as one of the worst endings possible to such a popular TV show. The show creators seemed to be hurrying up a lot with the plot resulting in not just an injustice to the viewers of the show but also its own characters as well.
The entire build-up around Jon Snow since the inception of the show was thrown out of the window, Daenerys abruptly went up the ladders to become the Mad Queen, suddenly got killed by her own lover and then everything swayed away with so much ease as nothing happened, and out of blue, Bran got selected as the new King. Even the two years-long waits for the final season of such a popular show failed to justify the ending of the story.
