6. The Woman in Black [2012]
The British based horror film is directed by James Watkins was originally written by Jane Goldman. It is adapted from Susan Hill’s 1983 novel with the same title. The storyline is primarily set during the dawn of the 20th century in England. Arthur Kipps, A heartbroken lawyer struggles to return to his normal life on the demise of his wife. On his official trip to a small town, he is disturbed by uncommon occurrences surrounding the people to unravel dark secrets.
The film’s strength lies with the plot and cinematography which successfully delivered a sense of darkness and panic. Danielle Radcliff was particularly praised for his performance post his wizarding detour. Although he was criticized for his portrayal as a father in the movie considering his youth persona in real. This modern horror flick runs on a light string with no extreme twists in the storyline while still delivering chilling elements without high stake horrors.

It follows is a supernatural psychological horror film directed by David Robert Mitchell. The film is based on a teenage girl who is mercilessly chased by an unknown supernatural entity after a sexual encounter. The film is inspired by the ’70s and 80’s horror films with a modern and simple premise and yet delivering a nail-biting experience.
There is raw tension created by chilling music and eerie cinematography ensuring a thrilling journey for the viewers. Unnecessary blood is absent and still provides the audience with sufficient jumpscares and creep element. The fear inflicted by the protagonist right from the opening scene of the movie from an inexplicable horror is mind-blowing. It’s a perfectly crafted 100minutes long nightmare directed towards you.
4. 1408 [2007]
1408 is an American psychological horror film directed by Mikael Hafstrom. It is an adaptation of one of Stephen King’s(renowned horror genre writer) short stories of the same name. The film is starred by John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mary McCormack.
This tensed thriller is based on a cynical and bold Author Mike Enslin who works on paranormal novels while allegedly staying in the mysterious hotel room 1408. Ever since his daughter’s demise, Mike indulges in a full-fledged writing career. But the titular room traps him as things spiral out of control soon as strange, ghostly apparitions and mind tricks start to haunt him in the New York City hotel.
The movie succeeds exceptionally great when it cleverly refrains from giant horror or gore but rather with simple jolt thrills, silent and yet hard-hitting personal emotional encounter with the protagonist himself. The screenplay is intelligent, gripping and entertaining while it was released with an alternate ending.
