        6. The Shining

If you’re a horror movie fan, there’s no way you don’t get the chills every time you hear “heeeeere’s Johnny” and don’t see Jack Nicholson’s face flashing in your mind. The Shining is based on a Stephen King novel and beyond that there’s not much you can say. What would you do if you find yourself snowed in in a mysterious hotel, where other than yourself there aren’t any other humans around? What if you slowly discover the hotel really doesn’t like guests? From Jack Nicholson’s deranged performance to the fact this movie just doesn’t give you a moment to breathe or feel safe. You keep asking at every turn what’s next?!

     5. Blair Witch Project

best horror movies of all time

Imagine a horror movie based on a terrifying legend and an even more terrifying man who murdered children. The Blair Witch project was and perhaps remains one of the most unsettling movies to date. Made in documentary form, the movie follows three armature film makers as they make their way into the woods where the scary Blair Witch resides and where notorious child killer Rustin Parr carried out his murders. But obviously when you’re in the haunted woods, things will go bump in the night.

The trio slowly find themselves descending into madness, fighting amongst each other and feeling utterly lost and helpless. To make matters even more frightening, the movie was marketed as being a true documentary so every scream, every wobbly shot, every fleeting scar image all made it seem all that real.

      4. Us

Jordan Peele knows how to make a good movie and he doesn’t disappoint with Us. The reason it tops our list is that Us dips into possibly most horror movie genres in an ingenious way so as to not leave watchers confused and give them a cinematic experience of a lifetime. From scary funhouse scenes, to home invasions to slasher flick and  toe in the sci fi horror genre, the movie will keep you gripped right till the end and even then with a plot twist of the century you’ll not be able to just get over the movie. The movie follows the Wilsons who decide to take a trip to their beach house as a getaway with their family friends. A strange encounter at the beach followed by a group of four who are out to terrorize them things can’t seem to get worse. Until they do and the family realizes that they’re being terrorized by their own dopplegangers!
